Join us Tuesday Dec 14 via Zoom as Co-Minister Bev Spivey shares the historical context, Bible scholarship, and metaphysical meanings of Christmas.
While still holding the magic of Christmas, we begin with a look at the historical underpinnings of Christmas, from pagan Solstice celebrations to the Roman Saturnalia. Through Biblical scholarship we understand discrepancies in Matthew’s and Luke’s versions of the Bible Christmas story. And through a deeper metaphysical view, we realize that the characters of the story live within each of us (Herod, Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds). Through these different ways of examining the age-old story, we can understand and more deeply appreciate the traditions that bring Christmas alive in our hearts again and again every year.

Did you know that the Christmas holiday shares its origins with the Winter Solstice? Before the development of Christianity, humankind celebrated “the return of the light” in late December when the days started to grow longer. Come celebrate this ancient observance Tuesday 12/21 at 7 pm at our Winter Solstice Drumming Circle. Bring a drum, rattle, or anything that can make noise!

Everyone is welcome at our beautiful Christmas Eve experience of the Christmas Spirit. Readings of the Christmas story are interspersed with carols and musical favorites by our talented musicians. Candle lighting highlights peace, joy, and love within. This service provides the perfect opportunity to symbolically release and let go of anything that may be blocking you from your fullest potential. After releasing, we continue the process by writing new intentions for a fuller experience of Spirit in our lives.

The White Stone ceremony symbolizes our belief in new beginnings, in new life each day, in an optimistic start to a new year. This ritual is a rite of passage into the new year by inviting us to release the limitations and mistakes of the past, and begin with a “clean slate.” During the ceremony, will be guided to reflect on who we want to be in the new year and receive a name, quality, or characteristic that resonates with our spiritual nature. It is a way to make a new beginning in life and an optimistic start to a new year.
All are invited to attend and participate in this powerful and deeply meaningful ceremony, held during our Sunday Celebration Service at 11 a.m. in our beautiful sanctuary.
We will meet virtually via Zoom and continue with meeting on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm.
February’s book is The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon, and March’s book is Death Comes In Through The Kitchen by Teresa Dovalpage. For April we will be discussing The Daughters of Erietown by Connie Schultz. Books are available for pick-up in our bookstore: please call the office to let us know you’re coming!
